School holidays are here, which means more time at home, more mouths to feed, and a whole lot of "I'm huuungry" echoing through the house. If you're after snacks that are fun to make, easy to pull together and don't involve a trip to the shops, we've got you covered.
These recipes are simple enough for little helpers to get stuck into, and they're all plant-based, so everyone can enjoy them. Grab your aprons (or don't, we're not fussy) and let's get snacking.
🥜 Choc Peanut Butter Bliss Balls
These are the ultimate rainy-day activity. No oven needed, just a bowl and some willing hands.
You'll need: 1 cup rolled oats, ½ cup peanut butter, ¼ cup maple syrup, 1 scoop protein powder, 2 tbsp dairy-free choc chips.
Mix everything together in a big bowl until it forms a dough you can roll. If it's too sticky, add a few more oats. Too dry? A splash of plant milk does the trick. Roll into balls, pop them in the fridge for 30 minutes, and you've got a stash of snacks ready for the week. Kids love rolling these, and honestly, so do we.
🍦 Frozen Yoghurt Berry Bark
Perfect for those warmer spring arvos.
You'll need: 2 cups coconut yoghurt, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 cup mixed berries, 2 tbsp shredded coconut (optional).
Stir the protein powder into the yoghurt, spread it out on a lined tray, then let the kids go wild decorating it with berries (and maybe a sprinkle of shredded coconut). Freeze for a couple of hours, snap it into pieces, and serve straight from the freezer. It's colourful, crunchy and disappears fast.
🍫 Choc Crackle Slice
A plant-based twist on the party classic, and kids love making it.
You'll need: 3 cups puffed rice, ½ cup melted coconut oil, ⅓ cup maple syrup, 2 tbsp cacao powder, 1 scoop choc protein powder.
Mix the coconut oil, maple syrup, cacao and protein powder until smooth, then stir through the puffed rice until it's all coated. Press into a lined tin, pop it in the fridge for an hour to set, then slice into squares. It's crunchy, chocolatey and perfect for lunchboxes or an afternoon treat.
🥞 Weekend Protein Pancakes
Holiday mornings deserve a little something special.
You'll need: 1 ripe banana, 1 cup plant milk, 1 cup self-raising flour, 1 scoop protein powder, ½ tsp cinnamon
Whisk it all together, cook small pancakes in a lightly oiled pan, and set up a toppings station with fruit, maple syrup and nut butter so everyone can build their own stack. Pancake art is highly encouraged.
🥤 Smoothie Popsicles
Got leftover smoothie? Don't let it go to waste. Blend 2 frozen bananas, 1½ cups plant milk, 1 scoop protein powder, then pour into moulds and freeze. Choc and banana is always a winner, but let the kids pick their own combo for a bit of fun.
A Few Handy Tips
Getting kids involved in the kitchen is a great way to fill a holiday afternoon, and they're way more likely to eat something they've made themselves. Give them the fun jobs like rolling, sprinkling and decorating, and keep the sharp knives and hot pans for the grown-ups.
As always, check the label and serving guidance on your products, and adjust recipes to suit your family.
Enjoy!
