Spring is the season for fresh starts, so while you're clearing out your wardrobe and giving the house a once over, it's the perfect time to give your supplement shelf the same treatment. If your pantry looks anything like ours, it's probably got a few half-used tubs, some mystery sachets, and at least one product you bought on a whim and never touched again. Let's fix that.
Step 1: Do the Big Sort
Pull everything off the shelf. Yes, everything. Lay it all out so you can see what you're working with, then sort into three piles:
- Keep โ things you use regularly and actually enjoy
- Use up โ still good, just needs a bit of love (and a plan)
- Toss โ expired, gone stale, or something you know deep down you're never opening again
Step 2: Check the Use-By Dates
Protein powders, creatine, and pantry mixes all have a shelf life. Give everything a quick date check, and if something's past its prime or the seal's been open for months, it's time to let it go. A general rule of thumb: if it smells off, looks clumpy, or you can't remember when you opened it, toss it.
Step 3: Actually Use What You've Got
This is the step most of us skip. That half bag of protein powder at the back of the cupboard isn't doing you any good sitting there. A few easy ways to work through it:
- Blend it into a smoothie with whatever fruit's in season
- Stir it through your morning oats or yoghurt
- Bake it into a mug cake or batch of protein balls for an easy snack
If you've got a few different flavours you're trying to use up, mixing and matching in recipes is a great way to clear them out without wasting anything.
Step 4: Rebuild With Purpose
Once your shelf's cleared out, think about what you actually want it to look like going into the warmer months. Spring often means more movement, whether that's getting back into training, walking more, or just spending more time outdoors, so it's worth thinking about what your routine needs right now rather than restocking out of habit.
A simple, no-fuss spring shelf might include:
- A protein powder you genuinely enjoy drinking (not just tolerate)
- Something for hydration if you're sweating more as it warms up
- A daily greens or gut health product if digestion's something you're mindful of
- Creatine, if that's part of your training routine
Step 5: Store It Properly
Last but not least, keep things airtight, out of direct sunlight, and somewhere they'll actually stay fresh. A cool, dry cupboard beats sitting on a sunny windowsill every time.
A clean, clutter-free shelf makes it so much easier to stick to good habits, because you're not digging through half-used bags just to make your morning shake. Take the twenty minutes this week and set yourself up properly for spring.
